Buy Me A Rose

He works hard to give her all he thinks she wants
A three car garage, her own credit cards
He pulls in late to wake her up with a kiss good night
If he could only read her mind, she'd say:

Buy me a rose, call me from work
Open a door for me, what would it hurt
Show me you love me by the look in your eyes
These are the little things i need the most in my life

Now the days have grown to years of feeling all alone
And she can't help but wonder what she's doing wrong
Cause lately she'd try anything to turn his head
Would it make a difference if she said:

Buy me a rose, call me from work
Open a door for me, what would it hurt
Show me you love me by the look in your eyes
These are the little things i need the most in my life

And the more that he lives the less that he tries
To show her the love that he hold inside
And the more that she gives the more that he sees
This is a story of you and me

So i bought you a rose on the way home from work
To Open the door to a heart that i hurt
And i hope you notice this look in my eyes
Cause i'm gonna make things right
I'm gonna hold you tonight
And do all these little things
For the rest of your life.

Coward Of The Country

Ev'ryone considered him the coward of the county.
He'd never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama called him tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
But something always told me they were reading tommy wrong.>
He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison.
I looked after tommy 'cause he was my brother's son. I still recall the final words my brother said to tommy:
"son, my life is over, but yours is just begun.

Promise me, son, not to do the things i've done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It don't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope you're old enough to understand:
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man."

There's someone for ev'ryone and tommy's love was becky.
In her arms he didn't have to prove he was a man.
One day while he was workin' the gatlin boys came callin'.
They took turns at becky.... there was three of them!

Tommy opened up the door and saw his becky cryin'.
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand.
He reached above the fireplace and took down his daddy's picture.
As his tears fell on his daddy's face, he heard these words again:

"promise me, son, not to do the things i've done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
>It don't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope you're old enough to understand:
Son, you don't have to fight to be a man."

The gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the barroom.
One of them got up and met him halfway 'cross the floor.
When tommy turned around they said, "hey look! ol' yellow's leavin'."
But you coulda heard a pin drop when tommy stopped and blocked the door.

Twenty years of crawlin' was bottled up inside him.
He wasn't holdin' nothin' back; he let 'em have it all.
When tommy left the barroom not a gatlin boy was standin'.
He said, "this one's for becky," as he watched the last one fall.
And i heard him say,

"i promised you, dad, not to do the things you done.
I walk away from trouble when i can.
Now please don't think i'm weak, i didn't turn the other cheek,
And papa, i sure hope you understand: Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man."

Ev'ryone considered him the coward of the county.

I Prefer The Moonlight

When temptin' eyes 'cross the room
Said to me i'd love to be with you
I'm not tempted for a moment
I just think about my woman
My baby calls me on the phone
Telling me i need to hurry home
Well the hurryin' is easy
'cause she's waiting up
With all the love i'm needin'

I prefer the moonlight, and a blanket
And the one right little lady by my side
That's what i like
I prefer a late drive down the turnpike
With the moonlight shinin' so bright
Got her by my side
That's what i'd like
When its magic moment time,
I prefer the moonlight

The river plays a quiet song
She and i lay down and play along
She's her mother's lovely daughter
Moonlight dances on the water
The moon is full and so am i
I look at her and feel like i could cry
But my tears contain no sorrow
'cause i know she'll wake up by my side tomorrow

I prefer...

Mornin' noon and night,
When the feelin' comes around
Somewhere in some sky
That ol' moon is surely shinin' bright

I prefer...

Lady

Lady, i'm your knight in shining armor and i love you
You have made me what i am and i am yours
My love, there's so many ways i want to say i love you
Let me hold you in my arms forever more

You have gone and made me such a fool
I'm so lost in your love
And oh, we belong together
Won't you believe in my song?

Lady, for so many years i thought i'd never find you
You have come into my life and made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear

In my eyes i see no one else but you
There's no other love like our love
And yes, oh yes, i'll always want you near me
I've waited for you for so long

Lady, your love's the only love i need
And beside me is where i want you to be
'cause, my love, there's somethin' i want you to know
You're the love of my life, you're my lady!

Lucille

In a bar in toledo across from the depot
On a barstool she took off her ring
I thought i'd get closer
So i walked on over
I sat down and asked her her name
When the drink finally hit her
She said i'm no quitter
But i finally quit living on dreams
I'm hungry for laughter
And here ever after
I'm after whatever the other life brings

In the mirror i saw him
and I closely watched him
I thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman
Who sat their beside me
He had a strange look on his face
The big hands were calloused
He looked like a mountain
For a minute i thought i was dead
But he started shaking
His big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said

You picked a fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
I've had some bad times
Lived thru' some sad times
But this time your hurtin won't heal
ya picked a fine time to leave me, lucille

After he left us, i ordered more whiskey
I thought how she made him look small
From the lights of the bar room to a rented hotel room
We walked without talking at all
She was a beauty, but when she came to me
She must have thought I'd lost my mind
I couldn't hold her, 'cause the words that he told her
Kept coming back time after time.

You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
I've had some bad time
Lived thru' some sad times
But this time your hurtin won't heal
you picked a fine time to leave me, lucille

You picked a fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
I've had some bad time
Lived thru' some sad times
But this time your hurtin won't heal

Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town

you've painted up your lips
And rolled and curled your tinted hair
Ruby are you contemplating
Going out somewhere
The shadow on the wall
Tells me the sun is going down
Oh ruby
Don't take your love to town

It wasn't me
That started that old crazy asian war
But i was proud to go
And do my patriotic chore
And yes, it's true that
I'm not the man i used to be
Oh, ruby i still need some company

Its hard to love a man
Whose legs are bent and paralysed
And the wants and the needs of a woman your age
Ruby i realize,
But it won't be long i've heard them say until i not around
Oh ruby
Don't take your love to town

She's leaving now cause
I just heard the slamming of the door
The way i know i've heard it
Some 100 times before
And if i could move i'd get my gun
And put her in the ground
Oh ruby
Don't take your love to town

Oh ruby for god's sake turn around

She Rides Wild Horses

It´s just her and the band and the clean up men
She´s counting up her tips
She did alright, she says goodnight

She drives home to a 3-room flat
Checks her machine and she feeds the cat
She´s almost asleep before she turns out the lights.

In her dreams she rides wild horses
And they carry her away on the wind
And they never make a sound
As they fly above the ground
Tonight she rides wild horses again.

She´s fallen in love a time or two
Somehow all of her dreams fell through
But she´s strong, she carries on.

Her life ain´t always gonna be this way
She knows she´s gonna shine someday
But for now, she´ll escape ´til the dawn.

In her dreams .....

Gambler

On a warm summers evening, on a train train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gmabler, we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a-starin out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us and he began to speak.

He said „Son i made a life out of readin peoples faces
Knowin what the cards were
By the way they held they’re eyes
So if you don’t mind my sayin
I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I’ll give you some advice“

So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And ask me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said „ if you’re gonna play the game boy
You gotta learn to play it right

Chorus:
You got to know when to hold ‚em
Know when to fold them
Know when to walk away
A Know when to run
You never count you’re money
When you’re sitttin‘ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin‘
When the dealin’s done

Every gambler knows
That the secret to survivin
Is knowin what to throw away
An knowin what to keep
So every hand’s a winner
And evry hand’s a loser
And the best that you can hope for is
To die in your sleep“

And when he finished speakin
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
And in his final word I found
An ace that I could keep
